CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is an emergency procedure combining chest compressions, artificial respiration, and sometimes defibrillation to maintain brain function until further measures can restore blood circulation and breathing in a person experiencing cardiac arrest.

Learning CPR empowers you to save lives during cardiac emergencies. Those who receive CPR within the first 2 minutes have an 81% greater chance of survival and 95% higher chance of avoiding significant brain damage. Even CPR started within 10 minutes increases survival rates by 19% compared to no CPR.

CPR certifications are valid for 2 years before requiring renewal. Even for non-certification training (Friends & Family CPR), we recommend refreshing your skills every 2 years.

No, unless required by your employer or licensing agency. Everyone can learn CPR through our Friends & Family CPR class.

Please come dressed in comfortable clothing that allows for movement, as you'll be practicing CPR techniques on the floor. All training materials, manikins, and AHA course materials are provided. If you're taking a certification course, you may want to bring a pen for the written exam. Water and light snacks are recommended for longer sessions.

The American Heart Association does not mandate a minimum age requirement for learning CPR. Studies show children as young as nine years old can learn and retain CPR skills, as the ability depends more on physical strength than age. For certification courses, participants must be able to pass both the skills assessment and written exam. Participants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Classes use a practice-while-watching technique. You'll practice CPR on a manikin while following instructional videos, covering adult/child/infant CPR, AED application, and rescue techniques. Some courses include skills assessment and written exams. We recommend comfortable clothing as you'll be kneeling on the floor

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in all AHA courses and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the AHA. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the AHA.
